If there’s one nutrient that deserves more attention, it’s fibre. Think of it as your body’s broom. It helps sweep away waste, keeps your digestion running smoothly and supports a healthy gut. Yet, here’s the surprising bit: only about 28% of Aussie adults are having enough fibre each day.
So, why is fibre so important?
Fibre does much more than keep you regular. It feeds the good bacteria in your gut, which plays a huge role in your overall health, from mood to metabolism and even immunity. A fibre-rich diet can also help stabilise blood sugar levels, lower cholesterol and make you feel fuller for longer (which is great if you're trying to manage your weight).
There are two main types of fibre: soluble and insoluble.
Soluble fibre dissolves in water to form a gel-like substance that helps lower cholesterol and stabilise blood sugar levels. You'll find it in foods like oats, apples, beans and psyllium husk.
Insoluble fibre, on the other hand, doesn't dissolve. It adds bulk to your stool and helps keep your digestive system moving smoothly. It's found in whole grains, nuts and seeds and the skins of fruits and vegetables.
Both types are important and eating a variety of plant foods helps you get a healthy balance of each.
According to the National Health and Medical Research Council, men should aim to consume at least 30g of fibre per day and women should aim to consume at least 25g per day, but most people fall well short of that.
The good news? It's easier than you think to boost your fibre!
Adding in a Smoothie Bomb and a handful of oats to your morning smoothie, choosing whole grains and seedy bread instead of white bread and pasta, and loading up on veggies, fruit, beans and lentils in your meals.
At Smoothie Bombs, we've made it simple to boost up your fibre intake. Each Smoothie Bomb contains natural sources like psyllium husk (shown below), nuts and seeds and dried fruit, giving your smoothie an extra gut loving boost without the brainwork of measuring these individual ingredients out.
We believe smoothies are one of the easiest ways to up your fibre intake. Not only does the Smoothie Bomb do the heavy lifting for you, you're also adding in whole fruits and veggies, which adds extra fibre, helps slow sugar release and keeps you satisfied for longer.
Blending up smoothies is a much better option than having fruit juices, which strips the fibre away from the fruit.
Some key high fibre fruits to always have handy for your smoothies include berries, pears, apples, bananas, melons & avocado (Yes, avocados in smoothies is a thing! It makes them super creamy).
So next time you're planning a meal (or smoothie!), think fibre first. Be sure to include a range of fruit, veg, nuts and seeds, whole grains, beans and lentils in your meals. It's truly your secret weapon for feeling energised, balanced and healthy from the inside out.
Top tip: When you increase your fibre intake it's important to make sure you're drinking the recommended 8 glasses of water a day!
